About the Yellowstone Park Trail Races

The courses all start and finish at the Rendezvous Ski Trails, which means you are running on groomed ski terrain through the forest west of Yellowstone. Several distance options are available, from a short loop up through a full fifty-kilometer effort. Elevation gain builds meaningfully as the distances grow, so even the shorter courses have some real climbing in them.

Check-in opens at the Rendezvous Ski Trails on race morning, giving you time to get your bib before a pre-race meeting where the race director walks through course markings. The Forest Service recommends carrying bear spray on the course, and the organizers note this as well, so factor that into what you pack.

Common Questions About the Yellowstone Park Trail Races

Will I finish last at the Yellowstone Park Trail Races?

Almost certainly not. Half the 10K field finished slower than 1:14:28, and the last recorded finisher came in around 2:20:34, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Yellowstone Park Trail Races a good first 10K?

It is a small race (23 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 10K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Yellowstone Park Trail Races?

The 10K winner ran 55:48 while the median finisher took 1:14:28. That spread points to a relatively quick field, so expect a competitive front end.
