About the Running of the Pumpkins 5K

The course runs through Cauley Creek Park on a purpose-built rubber running path that winds through wooded sections of the property. The surface is genuinely flat and smooth, which makes for quick times. The race has a Halloween costume tradition, and there is a post-race costume contest, so the start area tends to look more like a fall block party than a typical weekend road race.

Packet pickup happens the two days before the race at locations the organizers announce closer to the date. There is no race-morning pickup as a general option, though the organizers will consider exceptions if you reach out in advance. The park has its own parking lot, though it is a short walk from the lot to the start and finish area.

Common Questions About the The Running of the Pumpkins 5K

Will I finish last at the Running of the Pumpkins 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 35:09, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:12:04, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Running of the Pumpkins 5K a good first 3.1 Miles?

A field of 617 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Running of the Pumpkins 5K?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 17:47 while the median finisher took 35:09. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
