About the SPASM Crystal Springs Trail Run

The trails here run through Huddart Park, climbing into redwoods and ferns on courses that range from a short loop to a full ultramarathon distance. The longer you go, the more single-track you get, and the longer distances carry serious elevation. This is not a road race wearing trail shoes; the terrain earns the description.

Check-in opens race morning at the Werder Shelter inside Huddart Park. Parking requires exact change at the gate, so have it ready. Gear that is not worth worrying about can be left at the start and finish area, but there is no bag check and no dogs in the park.

Common Questions About the SPASM Crystal Springs Trail Run

Will I finish last at the SPASM Crystal Springs Trail Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:47:20, and the last recorded finisher came in around 5:19:52, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the SPASM Crystal Springs Trail Run a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (80 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the SPASM Crystal Springs Trail Run?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:35:51 while the median finisher took 2:47:20. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
