About the South Ridge Trail Challenge

The course runs along the South Ridge Plateau in North Park, and it earns its name. The terrain is hilly and technical, with climbing spread throughout rather than saved for one spot. Trails wind through woods that are thick and green by early summer. The start and finish are near a historic swimming pool, and several distance options share the same opening stretch before splitting apart.

Packet pickup opens on race morning, so there is no separate trip the day before. Full logistics arrive by email in the days leading up to the event, and it is worth reading before you load the car.

Common Questions About the South Ridge Trail Challenge

Will I finish last at the South Ridge Trail Challenge?

Almost certainly not. Half the 6.2 Miles field finished slower than 1:16:39, and the last recorded finisher came in around 2:05:26, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the South Ridge Trail Challenge a good first 6.2 Miles?

It is a small race (61 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 6.2 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the South Ridge Trail Challenge?

The 6.2 Miles winner ran 47:05 while the median finisher took 1:16:39. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
