About the SOMA DO Dash: The Phantom 5k

This is a medical student organization fundraiser that runs through the MSU campus, starting and finishing behind a campus building called Fee Hall. A few road crossings require you to pause for traffic since the roads stay open, and course volunteers are posted at those spots to guide you through. Costumes are encouraged, so expect some creative outfits on the course.

Packet pickup starts the morning of the race at Fee Hall. Parking is available in several nearby campus lots and in a couple of parking ramps, one next to the law school and one connected to the Wharton Center. After the race there are snacks and a raffle at the finish.

Common Questions About the SOMA DO Dash: The Phantom 5k

Will I finish last at the SOMA DO Dash: The Phantom 5k?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 31:21, and the last recorded finisher came in around 58:49, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the SOMA DO Dash: The Phantom 5k a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (121 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the SOMA DO Dash: The Phantom 5k?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 17:02 while the median finisher took 31:21. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
