About the Santa Cruz Trail Run

The course runs through Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, where the trees are tall enough to block out most of the sky. Single-track winds through the redwoods, then opens onto wider paths and even a stretch of sand. There are river crossings and exposed ridges, and the climbing is genuine. Ocean air pushes in from the coast, which you notice on the high sections.

Bib pickup happens race morning in the park. Parking inside the park costs a fee, and spots are limited, so carpooling from Felton is worth considering. After finishing, there is a spread of snacks at the finish, both sweet and salty, plus fresh fruit. No dogs are allowed inside the park.

Common Questions About the Santa Cruz Trail Run

Will I finish last at the Santa Cruz Trail Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.2 Miles field finished slower than 2:55:45, and the last recorded finisher came in around 7:03:04, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Santa Cruz Trail Run a good first 13.2 Miles?

It is a small race (125 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.2 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Santa Cruz Trail Run?

The 13.2 Miles winner ran 1:59:52 while the median finisher took 2:55:45. That spread points to a relatively quick field, so expect a competitive front end.
