The route follows the Rainbow Trail through the Sangre de Cristo range, hugging the wilderness boundary the entire way. Jagged peaks hang over the trail, which rolls through genuine backcountry with no groomed surfaces or buffer from the landscape. This is remote mountain running, and the terrain makes that obvious early.
