About the Salute to Veterans 5K/10K/Half Marathon

The race runs through Lake Accotink Park, on a course that has some gentle rolling to it but nothing that will slow you down much. The surroundings are wooded parkland, and the route is shared across several distance options that start in staggered waves. Water stations are spaced out along the course, so runners who want to move fast may want to carry their own hydration.

Bibs can be picked up at the race site the afternoon before, which makes for a calmer morning. Race-morning pickup is also available, starting well before the first wave goes off. The race honors veterans with free entry for those who served and reduced entry for active duty military; a government-issued military ID is required at check-in.

Common Questions About the Salute to Veterans 5K/10K/Half Marathon

Will I finish last at the Salute to Veterans 5K/10K/Half Marathon?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:10:07, and the last recorded finisher came in around 4:28:12, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Salute to Veterans 5K/10K/Half Marathon a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (176 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Salute to Veterans 5K/10K/Half Marathon?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:27:29 while the median finisher took 2:10:07. That spread points to a relatively quick field, so expect a competitive front end.
