About the Salem Distance Run

The course starts on Main Street and finishes inside Longwood Park, so the route has a point-to-point shape rather than a loop. Salem is a small city, and the race moves through the middle of it before settling into the park at the end. The terrain is typical of a Main Street corridor, mostly flat pavement with a gentle drop toward the finish.

Packet pickup runs the evening before at a local running store, with a second window at the park on race morning before the start. Parking is available at Longwood Park itself or in downtown Salem nearby. The award ceremony happens at the park once the race wraps up. Pets and strollers are not allowed on the course.

Common Questions About the Salem Distance Run

Will I finish last at the Salem Distance Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 30:29, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:10:34, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Salem Distance Run a good first 5K?

It is a small race (164 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Salem Distance Run?

The 5K winner ran 17:23 while the median finisher took 30:29. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
