About the Run In The New Year 5k/10K/Half Marathon

The course runs along the paved beach bike path at Bolsa Chica State Beach, flat the whole way with the surf audible and visible throughout. The half marathon does a couple of loops, which means spectators can catch runners more than once near the finish. A live band plays at the start and finish area, and post-race there are street tacos, tamales, fresh fruit, cookies, and a specialty coffee booth.

Packet pickup the day before is encouraged but not required. On race morning, pickup opens early in the westernmost lot in the state park. Enter through the main gate on Pacific Coast Hwy, stay left, and drive down to that far lot. Parking inside the state park requires payment, so bring exact change. Drop-offs can use the Warner and PCH turnaround.

Common Questions About the Run In The New Year 5k/10K/Half Marathon

Will I finish last at the Run In The New Year 5k/10K/Half Marathon?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 38:40, and the last recorded finisher came in around 2:26:59, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Run In The New Year 5k/10K/Half Marathon a good first 3.1 Miles?

A field of 692 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Run In The New Year 5k/10K/Half Marathon?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 16:34 while the median finisher took 38:40. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
