About the Raptor Run 5K

The course runs through Shawnee Prairie Preserve on natural trails, moving through open prairie, wooded stretches, and wetland areas. Along the way it passes several preserved historic structures on the property before looping back toward the Nature Center. The footing is trail rather than pavement, so expect softer ground and the kind of scenery that changes with the season.

Proceeds support a raptor ambassador program run by the county park district, which gives the race a clear local purpose. Post-race refreshments and an awards ceremony are held at the finish area near the Nature Center once the field has come in.

Common Questions About the Raptor Run 5K

Will I finish last at the Raptor Run 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 34:37, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:05:11, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Raptor Run 5K a good first 5K?

It is a small race (58 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Raptor Run 5K?

The 5K winner ran 19:57 while the median finisher took 34:37. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
