About the Race The Flame

This race is built around a concept: if a wildfire hit Santa Cruz, how fast could you get out? The course starts on the UC Santa Cruz campus at the East Field and runs down Coolidge Drive, finishing near the Bay Tree Campus Bookstore at High Street. It is a point-to-point route, mostly downhill, through campus.

An emergency preparedness fair runs at the finish line, where local organizations set up to share information about wildfire readiness and household preparedness. Parking is available in a remote lot on Hagar Drive, and shuttles run back up from the finish to where you left your car or bike. Dogs are not allowed on campus.

How we calculate these stats: RunSesh calculates these figures from the most recent published results of past editions, sourced from RunSignup. We show aggregates only: field size, winning and median times, and the cutoff. We never publish individual finisher tables. Last updated Oct 23, 2026.

Common Questions About the Race The Flame

Will I finish last at the Race The Flame?

Almost certainly not. Half the 2.5 Miles field finished slower than 20:58, and the last recorded finisher came in around 41:45, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Race The Flame a good first 2.5 Miles?

It is a small race (77 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 2.5 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Race The Flame?

The 2.5 Miles winner ran 11:27 while the median finisher took 20:58. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
