About the Pawtuxet River 5k: Run of the Mills

The course follows a rail trail along the Pawtuxet River, crossing trestle bridges and passing a pair of old mills. Part of the route dips through a historic district that holds federal historic preservation recognition. The surface is paved and the path is flat, with river views for most of the way out.

Bib pickup is at a middle school on race morning, before runners walk over to the start. The finish is back at the same school, so your car and the post-race area are in the same spot. Prize money goes to the top finishers overall, and all entry proceeds support the nonprofit that stewards the river.

Common Questions About the Pawtuxet River 5k: Run of the Mills

Will I finish last at the Pawtuxet River 5k: Run of the Mills?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 35:23, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:15:18, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Pawtuxet River 5k: Run of the Mills a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (179 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Pawtuxet River 5k: Run of the Mills?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 15:03 while the median finisher took 35:23. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
