About the P.O. Chris Hoban Memorial 5 Miler, 5K Run/Walk and Kid's Dash

The course starts and finishes at Xaverian High School on Shore Road in Bay Ridge. The longer distance heads out along the harbor promenade toward the Verrazano Bridge and back, while the shorter route stays on the promenade along the water. Both are out-and-back on road, flat along the water, with the bridge in view for much of the run.

There is in-person registration the afternoon before the race, and again on race morning before the start. An opening ceremony honoring the officer the race is named for kicks things off before the runners go. A post-race awards party follows the finish, and the Kids Dash runs afterward in front of the school.

Common Questions About the P.O. Chris Hoban Memorial 5 Miler, 5K Run/Walk and Kid's Dash

Will I finish last at the P.O. Chris Hoban Memorial 5 Miler, 5K Run/Walk and Kid's Dash?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 37:47, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:19:20, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the P.O. Chris Hoban Memorial 5 Miler, 5K Run/Walk and Kid's Dash a good first 5K?

A field of 662 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the P.O. Chris Hoban Memorial 5 Miler, 5K Run/Walk and Kid's Dash?

The 5K winner ran 19:31 while the median finisher took 37:47. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.

Where can I train for the P.O. Chris Hoban Memorial 5 Miler, 5K Run/Walk and Kid's Dash?

Join a local run club. BK Run Project, Black Men Run, Black Roses NYC and others in Brooklyn welcome runners of all paces, and a weekly group run is the most reliable way to hold a training block together.
