The course runs through Deer Grove Forest Preserve on trails, so the surface is natural rather than pavement. It is a certified course, which matters if you are chasing a time. The surroundings are wooded and quiet for a race morning, and a children's dash runs after the main events, so families tend to stick around.

Packet pickup runs the evening before at a local running store, with an early race-morning pickup window at the preserve itself. Parking is close to the start. Light food and drinks are set up at the finish line.
