About the Oatlands 5K - Miles for Mammograms

The course at Oatlands runs through open fields and patches of forest on a historic plantation property. The terrain is trail, and the defining moment is a steep climb the regulars call Heartbreak Hill. It earns its name. Cross-country teams have raced this same ground for years, so the trail is well-worn and the hill is no surprise to returning runners.

Packet pickup happens race morning before the start, so there is no need to make a separate trip. Awards go to the overall top finishers as well as age group winners across a broad spread of categories.

Common Questions About the Oatlands 5K - Miles for Mammograms

Will I finish last at the Oatlands 5K - Miles for Mammograms?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 28:00, and the last recorded finisher came in around 53:25, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Oatlands 5K - Miles for Mammograms a good first 5K?

It is a small race (68 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Oatlands 5K - Miles for Mammograms?

The 5K winner ran 17:23 while the median finisher took 28:00. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
