South Beach State Park sits right on the Oregon coast, and this race uses it well. The shorter distances run out-and-back on pavement, while the half marathon dips into trail terrain in the middle before returning to road. The surroundings are raw and wintry, with coastal air and rolling ground underfoot on the longer route.
The finish is the thing that separates this race from most. Depending on surf and wind conditions that morning, runners end near the Pacific shoreline or at the marina nearby, and either way there is an optional plunge into cold water waiting. It is the kind of post-race moment people talk about for a while.
