About the Mt. Tam Trail Run

The course starts at Stinson Beach and goes up, steadily and seriously, to the high ridgeline of Mt. Tamalpais. The views from the top are wide and open. The return brings you through Headlands trails before dropping back to the beach, so the finish feels earned in a way that flat courses rarely do.

Parking is in the Mt. Tam State Park and Muir Woods National Monument area. Post-race, there is food at the beach, and the setting makes it easy to linger with whoever came out to watch.

Common Questions About the Mt. Tam Trail Run

Will I finish last at the Mt. Tam Trail Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.7 Miles field finished slower than 3:09:05, and the last recorded finisher came in around 6:44:46, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Mt. Tam Trail Run a good first 13.7 Miles?

It is a small race (147 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.7 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Mt. Tam Trail Run?

The 13.7 Miles winner ran 1:54:02 while the median finisher took 3:09:05. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
