About the 7th Annual Mangum Marathon & 1/2 Marathon

The course runs quiet country roads out of a rural start area locals call the Dog Pen, with long stretches of open farmland and very little traffic. The terrain rolls throughout, and there is one serious climb late in the race that the organizers make no apologies for. Both the full and the half reverse course from their respective turnarounds, so you run the same roads back.

Packet pickup is offered the evening before at a brewery in Albemarle, or on race morning at the start. Support on course is minimal by design, so plan to carry your own hydration and nutrition well beyond what the sparse aid stops provide.

Common Questions About the 7th Annual Mangum Marathon & 1/2 Marathon

Will I finish last at the 7th Annual Mangum Marathon & 1/2 Marathon?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:22:59, and the last recorded finisher came in around 5:50:01, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the 7th Annual Mangum Marathon & 1/2 Marathon a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (61 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the 7th Annual Mangum Marathon & 1/2 Marathon?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:31:52 while the median finisher took 2:22:59. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
