About the Horseshoe Lake Trail Run

The course runs through a stretch of connected open space preserves on the ridge above the coast, following the Bay Area Ridge Trail for most of its length. The mix of single track and dirt road keeps things interesting underfoot, and the views reach out to the Pacific and across the Santa Cruz Mountains. The climbing is steady and real, spread across whichever distance you choose.

Packet pickup and check-in happen race morning at Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve. No fee is charged for parking. Runners doing the longer distances can leave a drop bag at the start and finish area.

Common Questions About the Horseshoe Lake Trail Run

Will I finish last at the Horseshoe Lake Trail Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 30K field finished slower than 3:24:20, and the last recorded finisher came in around 5:49:01, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Horseshoe Lake Trail Run a good first 30K?

It is a small race (38 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 30K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Horseshoe Lake Trail Run?

The 30K winner ran 2:01:14 while the median finisher took 3:24:20. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
