About the ERC New Year's Day 5 Miler & 5K

The course runs entirely on the park roads of Presque Isle, out and back along the peninsula with water on both sides for stretches. It is exposed in winter, so wind can be a real factor. The race goes ahead in nearly any weather, which on New Year's Day in Erie means you should dress for whatever the lake decides to throw at you.

Packet pickup opens before the start at a pavilion near the Waterworks area, and that same pavilion is the start, the finish, and the post-race gathering spot. Refreshments are set up inside after the race, which matters more than usual when temperatures are low. Internet can be unreliable at the park, so arrive with registration already handled.

Common Questions About the ERC New Year's Day 5 Miler & 5K

Will I finish last at the ERC New Year's Day 5 Miler & 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5 Miles field finished slower than 46:58, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:23:48, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the ERC New Year's Day 5 Miler & 5K a good first 5 Miles?

It is a small race (129 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the ERC New Year's Day 5 Miler & 5K?

The 5 Miles winner ran 28:20 while the median finisher took 46:58. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
