About the Dennis Risch Memorial 5K Run/Walk

The course runs through Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum, starting and finishing near the funeral home on the grounds. It is a genuinely unusual setting, the kind of place where old trees and quiet paths make the miles feel different from a road race. The arboretum gives it a parklike character, and the route winds rather than charges.

Check-in and packet pickup happen on race morning at the venue, so there is no need to come out the day before. After the race, there is a gathering at a local brewery a few miles away where people tend to linger.

Common Questions About the Dennis Risch Memorial 5K Run/Walk

Will I finish last at the Dennis Risch Memorial 5K Run/Walk?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 49:07, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:17:14, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Dennis Risch Memorial 5K Run/Walk a good first 5K?

It is a small race (121 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Dennis Risch Memorial 5K Run/Walk?

The 5K winner ran 17:45 while the median finisher took 49:07. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
