The course runs on a certified causeway route, so you get open sky and water on both sides for most of the race. It is flat and exposed, which means wind can be a real factor. The event is tied to a literacy nonprofit, and the atmosphere reflects that: there are vendor booths, live music, and a book character costume contest running alongside the race.
Packet pickup the day before is at the newspaper's offices, with race-morning pickup available as well for those who cannot make it the prior afternoon. Parking is at a nearby Target lot, and shuttle buses run from there to the start area throughout the morning.
