About the Crater Crawl

The course runs around a pair of volcanic pit craters northwest of Mountain Home, a site that holds federal landmark status. The terrain is rough and honest about it. A longer route circles both craters; a shorter out-and-back takes you to an overlook of the east crater without the full loop. Neither is flat or groomed.

Common Questions About the Crater Crawl

Will I finish last at the Crater Crawl?

Almost certainly not. Half the 6.2 Miles field finished slower than 1:27:42, and the last recorded finisher came in around 2:20:04, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Crater Crawl a good first 6.2 Miles?

It is a small race (22 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 6.2 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Crater Crawl?

The 6.2 Miles winner ran 50:12 while the median finisher took 1:27:42. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
