About the Christmas Classic 5k
The course runs around Double Oak Lake inside Oak Mountain State Park, so the scenery carries the race even if you are not chasing a fast time. The park's wildlife center is involved throughout: expect a raptor flyover at the start, and afterward you can get up close with some of the birds and animals they rehabilitate. A post-race brunch rounds out the morning.
Two finish line options set this one apart. The standard finish is exactly that. The other sends you into a cold-water plunge, with proceeds supporting the wildlife center on site. There is also a tackiest sweater contest with awards, which tends to pull out some creative choices. Note that the state park charges a small gate admission fee for all attendees.
