About the 2026 Chessie Trail Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, & 26.2 Relay
The Chessie Nature Trail follows a former rail line along the Maury River, connecting Lexington with the nearby community of Buena Vista. The surface is packed gravel and grass, smooth underfoot, with no road crossings and no pavement. The route passes stone canal ruins, limestone cliffs with small caves at their base, farmland, and stretches of riverside forest. Fall color is typically at its peak during race weekend.
The start and finish are in the same spot, and spectators can see runners pass through several times without moving far. The marathon covers the trail end to end more than once, so the same scenery reads differently as the light shifts through the narrow valley during the morning.
