About the Canyon of the Eagles 100: New Year's Trail Challenge (100K & 50K ULTRA, Marathon, 13.1M RUN & RUCK, 10K & 5K)

The course runs through Canyon of the Eagles, a nature preserve on the Colorado River outside Burnet. Limestone bluffs line the route, and the terrain shifts between open riverside stretches and wooded trail. The longer distances use a looped design, so you return to the start area repeatedly. Bald eagles are common enough here that spotting one mid-run is a real possibility, not a marketing claim.

The event spans two days, with shorter distances available on either day. A ruck option runs alongside the standard race distances, with pack weights verified at the start. The race is organized with generous cutoff windows, so runners moving at a hike pace have room to finish without racing the clock.

Common Questions About the Canyon of the Eagles 100: New Year's Trail Challenge (100K & 50K ULTRA, Marathon, 13.1M RUN & RUCK, 10K & 5K)

Will I finish last at the Canyon of the Eagles 100: New Year's Trail Challenge (100K & 50K ULTRA, Marathon, 13.1M RUN & RUCK, 10K & 5K)?

Almost certainly not. Half the 10K field finished slower than 1:16:29, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:53:42, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Canyon of the Eagles 100: New Year's Trail Challenge (100K & 50K ULTRA, Marathon, 13.1M RUN & RUCK, 10K & 5K) a good first 10K?

It is a small race (22 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 10K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Canyon of the Eagles 100: New Year's Trail Challenge (100K & 50K ULTRA, Marathon, 13.1M RUN & RUCK, 10K & 5K)?

The 10K winner ran 56:37 while the median finisher took 1:16:29. That spread points to a relatively quick field, so expect a competitive front end.
