About the California Classic Half Marathon

The half marathon and the longer zoo route both pass through Fresno Chaffee Zoo, routing runners past animal habitats before finishing at a minor league baseball stadium downtown. The zoo sections make the course genuinely unusual, the kind of terrain you are not going to find at most road races. The shorter distance skips the zoo and stays near the stadium.

Packet pickup happens the evening before at a Fleet Feet location in a shopping center north of downtown. Race-morning pickup is also available at the stadium, and buses shuttle the zoo-distance runners from there to their start. Strollers are welcome but must line up at the back.

Common Questions About the California Classic Half Marathon

Will I finish last at the California Classic Half Marathon?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:09:54, and the last recorded finisher came in around 3:34:06, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the California Classic Half Marathon a good first 13.1 Miles?

With 873 finishers there are runners at every pace, so you are never out on your own. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the California Classic Half Marathon?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:10:43 while the median finisher took 2:09:54. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
