About the Bright Futures Fun Run

The course starts and ends at a dedicated baseball field for players with disabilities, with a block-party atmosphere around the finish area. Several Durham Public Schools are represented, and a portion of each registration goes back to the school a runner signs up under, so the crowd tends to be school families cheering for their own.

Packet pickup runs the afternoon before at one of the participating schools, then again the following morning at a downtown running store. Race-morning pickup opens at the field before the start.

Common Questions About the Bright Futures Fun Run

Will I finish last at the Bright Futures Fun Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 33:44, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:13:04, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Bright Futures Fun Run a good first 5K?

It is a small race (143 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Bright Futures Fun Run?

The 5K winner ran 17:59 while the median finisher took 33:44. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
