Base 2 Space

Seattle, WA

Registration openAnnual since at least 2015

About the Base 2 Space

This is a stair climb up the Space Needle, not a road race. Two open-air staircases spiral up the outside of the structure, and you take an elevator back down from the observation deck at the top. The views open up as you go, with the city, the water, and the mountains coming into frame on the way up. The climb is a fundraiser for cancer research.

Dress for outdoor conditions, since the staircases are exposed to the weather. You can go up more than once if you want; there is a separate check-in tent for additional climbs.

Common Questions About the Base 2 Space

Will I finish last at the Base 2 Space?

Almost certainly not. Half the race field finished slower than 12:43, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:09:49, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Base 2 Space a good first race?

With 1,306 finishers there are runners at every pace, so you are never out on your own. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first race, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Base 2 Space?

The race winner ran 4:15 while the median finisher took 12:43. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.

Where can I train for the Base 2 Space?

Join a local run club. Club Northwest, Seattle Running Club, West Seattle Running Club and others in Seattle welcome runners of all paces, and a weekly group run is the most reliable way to hold a training block together.
