The course runs through downtown Grand Rapids along the river, covering road surfaces past the kind of urban scenery you get in a mid-sized city that takes its waterfront seriously. The marquee distance is a long one, and the race holds national championship status for that distance, so the field tends to include serious competitors alongside everyday runners. The atmosphere on course reflects that range.
