About the Step at a Time 5k

The course follows the Carrollton Greenbelt, weaving between greenway paths and open roads alongside Lake Carroll. The terrain shifts enough to keep things interesting, and the route has a reputation for being quick. The race benefits a local domestic violence shelter, which gives the morning a purpose beyond the finish line.

Packet pickup runs the evening before the race at SoleRoots Running Company, a local running store in Carrollton. Race-morning pickup is worth checking on if the evening before does not work for you.

Common Questions About the A Step at a Time 5k

Will I finish last at the Step at a Time 5k?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 38:09, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:11:03, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Step at a Time 5k a good first 5K?

It is a small race (110 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Step at a Time 5k?

The 5K winner ran 17:53 while the median finisher took 38:09. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
