About the 4Y5K: Community of Care

This is a UVA campus tradition run by the Peer Health Educators, open to students, faculty, staff, and Charlottesville residents alike. Proceeds go to several local and national causes, including an animal shelter and a justice center. The race runs rain or shine, which tells you something about how seriously the organizers take the tradition.

Packet pickup happens earlier in the race week at a campus health building on Brandon Ave. On race day, parking near the UVA Amphitheater is limited, and the organizers suggest walking, biking, or busing in if you can. The amphitheater is the place to aim for.

Common Questions About the 4Y5K: Community of Care

Will I finish last at the 4Y5K: Community of Care?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 35:46, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:21:29, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the 4Y5K: Community of Care a good first 5K?

With 1,477 finishers there are runners at every pace, so you are never out on your own. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the 4Y5K: Community of Care?

The 5K winner ran 16:32 while the median finisher took 35:46. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
