About the 22nd Race into the New Year 5k & 1/4 Mile Fun Dash

The course runs out and back along the boardwalk and then up the road toward Gordon's Pond at Cape Henlopen State Park. It is flat, on pavement, with the ocean nearby for most of the route. The turnaround is at the state park entrance, and the finish brings you back to the bandstand at the foot of Rehoboth Avenue.

Packet pickup the evening before is at the bandstand, where the race also starts and finishes. Race-morning pickup is available, but the organizers ask that you leave yourself extra time, especially if you are driving in. The kids' dash goes off just before the main race, with the gathered field cheering from the finish area.

Common Questions About the 22nd Race into the New Year 5k & 1/4 Mile Fun Dash

Will I finish last at the 22nd Race into the New Year 5k & 1/4 Mile Fun Dash?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 30:56, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:19:37, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the 22nd Race into the New Year 5k & 1/4 Mile Fun Dash a good first 3.1 Miles?

A field of 460 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the 22nd Race into the New Year 5k & 1/4 Mile Fun Dash?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 16:48 while the median finisher took 30:56. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
