About the Wenzel Memorial 5K

The route circles a university campus and starts and finishes on the boulevard in front of a memorial statue to the man the race honors. Gregg Wenzel was a former student-athlete and triathlete who died while working abroad, and the course is a way for the campus community to mark that. The terrain is typical of a college campus, mostly paved and navigable.

Check-in and registration both happen at the West Gym before the start. The race draws a mix of students and others, and the entry fee differs for each group. Exact change is required if you pay on-site.

Common Questions About the Wenzel Memorial 5K

Will I finish last at the Wenzel Memorial 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 28:57, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:03:21, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Wenzel Memorial 5K a good first 5K?

It is a small race (86 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Wenzel Memorial 5K?

The 5K winner ran 20:29 while the median finisher took 28:57. That spread points to a relatively quick field, so expect a competitive front end.
