About the 35th Annual Virginia Run Turkey Trot

This is a Thanksgiving morning race rooted in the Virginia Run neighborhood. The course runs through the surrounding community, and the crowd tends to be heavy on families, dogs in costume, and turkey hats. Options exist for runners and walkers, so the field mixes people treating it as a workout with people treating it as a holiday outing. The race also raises money for addiction treatment scholarships.

Packet pickup runs the evening before at the Virginia Run Community Association on Wetherburn Court, with a short window on race morning as well. Parking is spread across several nearby church lots; the Community Association itself has none. Race morning starts before full daylight, so a headlamp is worth packing if you are crossing the highway nearby.

Common Questions About the 35th Annual Virginia Run Turkey Trot

Will I finish last at the 35th Annual Virginia Run Turkey Trot?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 31:21, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:02:15, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the 35th Annual Virginia Run Turkey Trot a good first 5K?

With 766 finishers there are runners at every pace, so you are never out on your own. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the 35th Annual Virginia Run Turkey Trot?

The 5K winner ran 16:23 while the median finisher took 31:21. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
