About the VALPARAISO YMCA // RINGING IN SPRING 5K

The course starts just outside the Valparaiso Family YMCA and winds through the north end of the city before looping back to the start. The route passes through residential neighborhoods, and daffodils planted along the way mark the season. Volunteers are stationed throughout to keep everyone on track. Dogs are not permitted on the course, but strollers are welcome at the back of the corral.

Packet pickup runs over the two evenings before the race at a local fitness studio on Calumet Avenue. If you miss those windows, the YMCA gym opens early on race morning as a backup. The race benefits the YMCA's annual campaign, which funds scholarships for programs and childcare, so the entry fee goes directly to the community.

Common Questions About the VALPARAISO YMCA // RINGING IN SPRING 5K

Will I finish last at the VALPARAISO YMCA // RINGING IN SPRING 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 32:09, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:11:15, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the VALPARAISO YMCA // RINGING IN SPRING 5K a good first 5K?

A field of 674 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the VALPARAISO YMCA // RINGING IN SPRING 5K?

The 5K winner ran 16:22 while the median finisher took 32:09. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
