About the Thornton Turkey Trot

The Thornton Turkey Trot has been running on Thanksgiving morning in Glenwood for decades, making it one of the longer-standing turkey trots in the state. The course is a road race, and the field tends to draw serious runners from across the south suburbs alongside families out for a walk before dinner. There is also a short kids run for younger runners.

Packet pickup happens the evening before at a local running store called Running for Kicks. On race morning, pickup opens before the start. Post-race awards go deep into the age groups, and there is a separate team competition for high school squads, with boys and girls scored separately.

Common Questions About the Thornton Turkey Trot

Will I finish last at the Thornton Turkey Trot?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 34:51, and the last recorded finisher came in around 50:56, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Thornton Turkey Trot a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (75 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Thornton Turkey Trot?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 20:26 while the median finisher took 34:51. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
