About the Shady City Race

The Shady City Race runs along the Jim Simmons Memorial Trail, a paved, tree-lined path through Marysville. The canopy overhead keeps things cool, and the surface is smooth throughout. There are distance options for adults and a short out-and-back course for kids, so families tend to show up together. Chip timing tracks the run.

Packet pickup opens before the first wave goes off, so there is time to get sorted without rushing. Awards follow the adult races in the late morning, giving most finishers a reason to hang around after they cross.

Common Questions About the The Shady City Race

Will I finish last at the Shady City Race?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 34:10, and the last recorded finisher came in around 55:50, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Shady City Race a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (68 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Shady City Race?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 15:05 while the median finisher took 34:10. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
