About the Salvation Army: Run for Hope

The course runs on paved paths through Byrd Park, a green open space in Richmond. The route is smooth underfoot, and strollers are welcome, which gives the start area a neighborhood-outing feel rather than a racing atmosphere. The race benefits a youth center serving the Church Hill area, so the crowd tends to reflect that mission.

Packet pickup is available the evening before at a local running shop, or on race morning at the park. Parking is not available right at the lake, but street parking nearby and a spot at a local elementary school are both options, with a short walk down to the start area from some of them.

Common Questions About the The Salvation Army: Run for Hope

Will I finish last at the Salvation Army: Run for Hope?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 30:45, and the last recorded finisher came in around 59:05, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Salvation Army: Run for Hope a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (86 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Salvation Army: Run for Hope?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 16:53 while the median finisher took 30:45. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
