About the Pistol

The course runs along a paved greenway beside Pistol Creek, starting and finishing at a pool center in Alcoa. The terrain is gentle with some rolling sections, and the loop layout means you pass through the main area repeatedly, which keeps things social and lets crew and volunteers stay close. The course is lit through the night, so runners going long have full visibility.

Packet pickup happens the evening before at a nearby airport hotel, where there is also a race store and a chance to preview the course and meet other runners. Aid stations are stocked around the clock with the usual ultra staples and, as the night goes on, hot food like soup, grilled cheese, and burritos.

Common Questions About the The Pistol

Will I finish last at the Pistol?

Almost certainly not. Half the 31.14 Miles field finished slower than 6:50:19, and the last recorded finisher came in around 23:29:41, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Pistol a good first 31.14 Miles?

It is a small race (150 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 31.14 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Pistol?

The 31.14 Miles winner ran 3:41:33 while the median finisher took 6:50:19. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
