About the Northern Outer Banks Salt & Sound Run/Walk

The course runs along water thoroughfares, across boardwalks, and out toward the Currituck Sound, so the terrain shifts underfoot as you go. It is not a fast course, and it is not meant to be. Waterfowl, wetlands, and wild horses are part of what you pass, and the rear marshals patrol the course on horseback.

The race is held at the Currituck County Rural Center, which has permanent restrooms on site. After the finish, there is a pancake breakfast waiting for anyone who sticks around.

Common Questions About the The Northern Outer Banks Salt & Sound Run/Walk

Will I finish last at the Northern Outer Banks Salt & Sound Run/Walk?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 30:25, and the last recorded finisher came in around 59:06, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Northern Outer Banks Salt & Sound Run/Walk a good first 5K?

It is a small race (76 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Northern Outer Banks Salt & Sound Run/Walk?

The 5K winner ran 15:14 while the median finisher took 30:25. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
