About the Longhorn Stampede

The Longhorn Stampede raises money for the high school's track and cross country athletes, so the crowd around the start has a real school-event feel. Packet pickup and the start area are both at the school field house, and there is a costume contest just before the gun, with prizes for the most festive outfits.

Packet pickup runs the evening before at the field house, with race-morning pickup available as well. The start area is on school grounds, which keeps everything contained and easy to navigate on arrival.

Common Questions About the The Longhorn Stampede

Will I finish last at the Longhorn Stampede?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 34:43, and the last recorded finisher came in around 56:15, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Longhorn Stampede a good first 5K?

It is a small race (87 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Longhorn Stampede?

The 5K winner ran 17:49 while the median finisher took 34:43. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
