About the Heart & Sole 5K

The race starts and finishes at a church in Americus, making for a straightforward out-and-back setup with no complex navigation. It is held in memory of Cole Varnum, a young local man who died of sudden cardiac arrest, and proceeds go toward placing defibrillators in schools and businesses around the area and funding CPR training.

The start area is at the church, so there is a clear gathering point before the gun goes off. Awards go several age groups deep, and cash prizes are on the line for the overall winners.

Common Questions About the The Heart & Sole 5K

Will I finish last at the Heart & Sole 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3 Miles field finished slower than 36:16, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:03:56, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Heart & Sole 5K a good first 3 Miles?

It is a small race (149 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Heart & Sole 5K?

The 3 Miles winner ran 16:59 while the median finisher took 36:16. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
