About the Growing Minds Foundation 5K

The course starts and finishes at Black River Overlook Park, just across the highway from a bank in Pocahontas. The park sits along the river, so you get water views during the race. The route is a 5K out-and-back or loop from that overlook, and the terrain is what you would expect from a riverside park: mostly flat, paved or packed surface.

After the race, the Growing Minds Foundation runs a fall festival on site. Food trucks, live music, and a color blast foam party are all part of it, so there is reason to hang around once you cross the finish. The event supports medical scholarships for children with disabilities in the region, and the post-race scene reflects that family-centered purpose.

Common Questions About the The Growing Minds Foundation 5K

Will I finish last at the Growing Minds Foundation 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 34:51, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:00:46, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Growing Minds Foundation 5K a good first 5K?

It is a small race (39 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Growing Minds Foundation 5K?

The 5K winner ran 21:31 while the median finisher took 34:51. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
