About the Elkmont Hound Dog Half

The course mixes road and trail, winding through the outdoor scenery around Elkmont. It is a genuine mix of surfaces and enough challenge to keep it interesting, and dogs on leash are welcome to run the half alongside their owners. A separate shorter course is set up for people who want to walk or run with their dog at a more casual pace.

Packet pickup runs the evening before at a Fleet Feet location, with an option to pick up at the registration tent on race morning. Parking is on the band practice field at the high school. Bathrooms are available at the start and at points along the course.

Common Questions About the The Elkmont Hound Dog Half

Will I finish last at the Elkmont Hound Dog Half?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:34:55, and the last recorded finisher came in around 3:05:00, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Elkmont Hound Dog Half a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (37 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Elkmont Hound Dog Half?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:25:08 while the median finisher took 2:34:55. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
