About the Bugle Bolt

The course runs through Ponca and the Boxley Valley with very little elevation change, so it moves quickly underfoot. Fall timing puts it squarely in elk bugling season, and the foliage along the route tends to be near its peak. Race proceeds support a local memorial scholarship fund honoring a former Jasper High School student.

Several trailheads are a short drive from the finish, and the grab bag includes directions to nearby options like Lost Valley Trail and Hawksbill Craig. It makes for a natural way to stretch the morning into a full day out in the valley.

How we calculate these stats: RunSesh calculates these figures from the most recent published results of past editions, sourced from RunSignup. We show aggregates only: field size, winning and median times, and the cutoff. We never publish individual finisher tables. Last updated Oct 22, 2026.

Common Questions About the The Bugle Bolt

Will I finish last at the Bugle Bolt?

Almost certainly not. Half the race field finished slower than 38:39, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:01:54, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Bugle Bolt a good first race?

It is a small race (20 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first race, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Bugle Bolt?

The race winner ran 27:01 while the median finisher took 38:39. That spread points to a relatively quick field, so expect a competitive front end.
