The Blue Move

Sioux Falls, SD

Registration openAnnual since at least 2023

About the Blue Move

The course runs out and back along a paved trail beside the Big Sioux River, starting from Fawick Park in downtown Sioux Falls. It is flat road the whole way, and at intervals along the route there are signs with facts about colorectal cancer. The finish line involves running through a large inflatable colon, which tends to get a reaction from the crowd.

Packet pickup runs the evening before at Falls Community Health, with a second window on race morning at Fawick Park. Parking on race day is free in a nearby lot; street parking in the area now costs money on Saturdays. Strollers are allowed, and so are leashed dogs.

Common Questions About the The Blue Move

Will I finish last at the Blue Move?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 31:20, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:05:50, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Blue Move a good first 5K?

It is a small race (54 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Blue Move?

The 5K winner ran 20:27 while the median finisher took 31:20. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
