The course runs around Darlington Raceway, the historic NASCAR track, so you are on the actual racing surface for most of it. It is flat pavement the whole way, and the scale of the place is striking when you are on foot. The race honors a Florence police officer killed in the line of duty, and that weight is present in the atmosphere.

Runners park outside and walk into the infield through a tunnel beneath the track, which is a memorable way to arrive at a start line. Packet pickup happens at the raceway ticket office in the days before the race, with a morning-of option available as well. Strollers, headphones, and leashed pets are all welcome.
