About the Tap into the Trails

The course runs out of Festival Square in downtown Cheboygan, mixing pavement with crushed limestone along state trails that cut through the area. It is mostly flat, and the trails connect directly from the center of town, so you are on open path quickly. Some road sections are monitored by local police during the event.

Parking and restrooms are at City Hall. The course stays open to other trail users while the race is running, so expect to share the path. Headphones are discouraged given the mixed-use setting.

Common Questions About the Tap into the Trails

Will I finish last at the Tap into the Trails?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 37:05, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:17:43, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Tap into the Trails a good first 5K?

It is a small race (38 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Tap into the Trails?

The 5K winner ran 17:24 while the median finisher took 37:05. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
